AI search visibility, what it is and why it matters

AI search visibility is whether AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews mention, cite, or recommend your business when someone asks a question related to what you do. It matters because a growing share of buyers now ask an AI for a recommendation before they ever open Google, and if the AI doesn't know about you, it can't recommend you, no matter how good your Google ranking is.

What does "AI search visibility" actually mean?

Traditional search visibility is about ranking on a results page a human scans and clicks through. AI search visibility works differently. Instead of a list of links, the person gets a direct, synthesized answer, and your business is either named inside that answer or it isn't. There's no page two. You're in the answer, or you're invisible.

This shift has its own vocabulary. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) are the terms for structuring a business's online presence so AI systems can find and cite it accurately. As we've covered before, this is a fundamentally different discipline from traditional SEO, not a rebrand of it.

Why is this happening now?

AI search traffic has grown faster than traditional organic search over the past year. Part of the reason is zero-click search, where AI Overviews and direct-answer boxes sit above the traditional Google results and answer the question before anyone clicks through to a website. Gartner has forecast that organic search traffic to many websites could fall by 50% or more by 2028 as this becomes the default way people search rather than the exception.

None of this means Google search is dying. It means AI systems now sit between a lot of buyers and the businesses they're looking for, and those systems decide, on your behalf, whether you're worth mentioning.

Does it actually matter for conversions, or is it just hype?

This is worth answering honestly rather than with a headline number, because the industry loves an inflated multiplier. Several independent studies, including from Ahrefs, Semrush, and RankScience, have found that visitors who arrive via an AI-generated answer convert at meaningfully higher rates than visitors from traditional organic search, with cited figures ranging from roughly 1.3x to over 20x depending on the study, the industry, and how "AI traffic" is measured.

The honest read is that AI-referred visitors tend to arrive further along in their decision, having already had their basic questions answered by the AI, so the ones who do click through are more qualified. The catch is that AI referral traffic is still a small share of total traffic today, so the opportunity is real, but it's early, and it's growing quickly rather than already being large.

Who should actually care about this right now?

Any business where customers research before buying, including trades, professional services, healthcare, hospitality, agencies, and ecommerce, is already being asked about by AI users, whether the business knows it or not. The businesses at the most immediate risk are the ones that rely heavily on being found through informational or "best [service] near me" type searches, since those are exactly the queries AI Overviews and chatbots now intercept before a click ever happens.

What actually determines whether an AI recommends a business?

Four things, at a high level.

  1. Can AI crawlers actually reach your site. Technical access and indexation matter, particularly on Bing, since it powers a large share of AI web search.
  2. Does your site give AI something concrete to cite. Clear, structured, fact-dense content beats vague marketing copy.
  3. Does the rest of the web agree with what your site says about you. Consistent business details and independent mentions build the trust AI models weigh before naming a source.
  4. Is your information current. AI systems consistently favor recently updated content when answering commercial questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI search visibility the same as SEO?

No, though they overlap. SEO earns a ranking position on a results page a human scans. AI search visibility (AEO/GEO) earns a citation inside an answer the AI writes before the person sees any list at all. Strong technical SEO helps AI visibility, but it isn't sufficient on its own.

Can I check whether my business already shows up in AI search?

Yes, ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google directly, using the real questions a customer would type, such as "best [your service] in [your city]." Do this without being logged into your own accounts or browsing history to get an unbiased result.

How long does it take to improve AI search visibility?

Some technical fixes, like unblocking a crawler or adding schema, can show effects within weeks. Broader content and trust-signal improvements typically take a few months to compound, since AI systems favor content with a track record of consistency and recent updates, not a one-off change.

Is this only relevant for big brands?

No, if anything, small and local businesses have more to gain, since AI models frequently answer highly specific local questions like "best physio in Bondi," where a smaller business with clear, well-structured information can outcompete a larger brand with a thin or generic web presence.
